Season Information


SoCal runs a youth basketball program in conjunction with the Calgary Minor Basketball Association (CMBA).  Our in-house U9 program is designed as a fun introduction to basketball with all sessions taking place in South Calgary.  The U11+ teams practice within South Calgary during the week and play games on Saturday's (possibly Friday nights for U15), which are officiated by licensed referees, throughout the city against other CMBA zones.

 

Ages

The age listed is the age of the player as of December 31st of the registration year.

  • Under 9 (U9) Program Info
    • Designed for 6 - 8 years olds.  Pleaes contact the SoCal Registrar if you are looking to register a 5 year old.
  • Under 11 (U11), 13 (U13), 15 (U15), and 18 (U18) Program Info
    • 9 and 10 years old = U11
    • 11 and 12 years old = U13
    • 13 and 14 years old = U15
    • 15 years old and in Grade 9? Option to register in U15 or U18.
      • If interested in playing U15, you must first register in U18 and then contact the SoCal Registrar to have them move you to U15, after which you can pay the fee difference.
    • 15 years old and in High School?  Must register in the U18 program.
    • 16 and 17 years old = U18

Players cannot play down an age group although exceptions can be made for youth with disabilities.  Players wanting to play up an age group must be approved by SoCal.  Contact the SoCal Registrar for more information.

 

Evaluations & Team Placement

  • All players and skills are welcomed; prior experience is not required!
  • All players will be placed on a team. Evaluations (U11+) ensure that players are placed on teams of similar skill level.
  • All U11+ registrants are evaluated up to 3 times in early September.
  • All U11+ are gender specific teams, comprise of 9 - 13 players, and are coached by volunteers (usually parents).
  • Once placed on a team, this is where the player remains for the season.
  • REFUNDS ARE NOT PROVIDED DUE TO TEAM PLACEMENT.

 

Season Timeline

U9

  • Registration opens mid-June and closes mid-September, subject to capacity.
  • There are no evaluations.
  • Weekly sessions begin late-September and the optional skills sessions begin early-October.
  • There are no games/practices during school winter break times.
  • The season ends late February.

U11, U13, and U15

  • Registration opens mid-June and closes mid-August, subject to capacity.
  • Evaluations are held in early September
  • Practices begin in mid-to-late September and games begin in October.
  • There are no games/practices during school winter break times.
  • The season ends early March.
  • Teams that qualify will have an optional Provincial Tournament that occurs in March.

U18

  • Consists of two seasons with separate registrations to accommodate the High School basketball season.
  • Fall season:
    • Registration opens mid-June and closes mid-August, subject to capacity.
    • Evaluations are held in early September
    • Season starts mid-September and ends mid-November.
    • Open to all high school students.
  • Winter season:
    • Registration opens in December, after school High School Teams are formed.
    • Evaluations are held late December.
    • Season starts early January and ends in March.
    • PLAYERS WHO MAKE THEIR HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAMS ARE INELIGIBLE TO PLAY IN THE WINTER CMBA SEASON.
